Map location of Dempsey Hill area

Brainstorming from the location and the program of the project, there are several similiarity that can be found from both sides. Such as, the open air courtyard in Peranakan house and the open verandahs in Tanglin barracks architecture (located in Dempsey Hill area in 1972). There is another similiarity of the classical order of the Peranakan architecture and the square columns of the Tanglin barracks.

The proposed concept for this project focus more on the Peranakan culture. It began with the origin of Peranakan culture which is the time when the local culture meet with the culture of the immigrants and developed the Peranakan culture. The openess of how local people welcome the immigrants will be represent in the design of the building with open air spaces.

The concept 'Interlace' came from the crossing path of the local culture and the immigrants that made them grew closer to each other and resulted the born of Peranakan culture. This concept will be applied to the layout design through out the whole building and the design elements of each area.

This project will be located at Dempsey Hill, Block 8D. surrounded by lush greenery in the heart of Singapore, make this area suitable to attract both tourist and local people to understand deeper about the local culture, Peranakan Culture.

The term 'Peranakan' is known as 'local born' or 'local decendants, they are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came and settled in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore between 15th and 17th centuries. The young generation of Peranakan descendants have been influenced with globalisation where English and Mandarin has replaced Peranakan Malay as their main language.
